Visual Impairment Scotland
Back to Introduction Page
V.I. Scotland
is an national
organisation of people who work together in the area of visual impairment. It is
made up of Ophthalmologists, Community Pediatricians, Educationalists,
Psychologists, Computer Experts, and Parent Representatives and Children.
What do we do?
The primary aim of
V.I. Scotland
is to help visually impaired children and their parents.
We hope to provide up-to-date information about
services available and specific information about each child’s visual
condition.
By collecting together information about individual
children we will be able to find out how many visually impaired children there
are in Scotland, where they come from and what services they receive.
By knowing this we aim to match the needs and
resources available for every parent and child.
Where are we?
V.I. Scotland
is based in Edinburgh at the Scottish Sensory Centre. It is a
national organisation serving the whole of Scotland.
Why were we set up?
By developing a new notification system specifically
for visually impaired children we hope to identify all children in Scotland and
to empower the parents and so that they can meet their own needs and the needs
of their children.
We aim to;
1. Provide an information and contact service for
visually impaired children and their parents.
2. Work towards ensuring that services provided are
equivalent in all areas of Scotland.
3. Identify the causes of visual impairment in
Scotland and therefore aid research into prevention.
V.I. Scotland is funded mainly by the
Scottish Executive.
